Have you thought about what causes disease in the human body and how to cure it? In this video clip, Austin Vickers, creator of the docudrama, “People v. The State of Illusion”, explains how we create disease and the proactive steps each of us can take to cure it.

AUSTIN VICKERS: The word ‘disease’ really implies a state of uneasiness. It’s ‘dis-ease’, a lack of ease. When considering where disease comes from in the body, I think it’s important to consider the ways or the things that perhaps we are feeling uneasy with.

With many people, sometimes, that’s who they are, or what is it that they are devoting their lives to or the people that they have in their lives, and if we stay in a state of thought which is uneasy for a long period of time, then I believe that chronic thinking ultimately contributes to the physical manifestation of that lack of ease or that ‘dis-ease’ in the body.

So when anyone is ever suffering from disease, the one question I always like to ask them is, “What do you feel uneasy about in your life, whether it’s your relationships or your work or the things that you are passionate about or how authentic you are being, or what it is that you stand for or putting up with? Is there a place in your life that you are feeling uneasy?”

And as we begin to unlock the uneasiness that perhaps exists in their lives, then I think we begin to get to the root of ‘dis-ease’ in the body, and ultimately our goal should always be to be in a state of congruency, to be in a state of authenticity, about who we are, what it is that we are doing, and how we feel in any given moment. As we rid ourselves of uneasiness in the mind, I believe that we begin to rid ourselves of uneasiness or disease in the body.

With millions out of work in America, filling the unemployment lines, self-help expert Austin Vickers explains the trick to landing your dream job. Watch this video clip and learn how to challenge the assumptions which hold us back.

AUSTIN VICKERS: Well thinking alone won’t change their reality. You can’t just sit on the couch at home and wish for a better job and hope that all of a sudden it will magically going to appear. I don’t think it works that way, but imagination can change their reality, looking at the problem of, ‘how do I get to work, how do I create a job while it appears that none is existing’, is the beginning of thinking that will in fact change their reality.

But it requires us to challenge our assumptions; maybe we have to work for less money. One of the pieces of advice I give to a lot of people around me when they ask me about finding work is, I say to them go to the company for example that you would most want to work for and offer your services for free.

What if you showed up on their doorstep and simply said to them, “I believe in myself and you are going to believe in me in 30 days but for the next 30 days I am going to come and work for you for free, and if at the end of that 30 days you think I have made a contribution…then hire me, and if you feel like I am not valuable to your company then you can let me go and you don’t owe me a thing”.

If people do this and they believe in themselves and then take that action, how often is it that an employer is going to simply let them work for 30 days and then let them go? Trust me, it doesn’t happen that often that people approach us willing to give that kind of a contribution for free with such a strong belief in themselves.

So we have to challenge the way we are thinking about these problems, even when it comes to things like unemployment or being out of work, and then we have to employ new strategies that will help us employ our imagination and create results, not only for ourselves but also for the people that we are trying to get work from, or our jobs.

And when we begin to think in new ways and challenge our own assumptions about the problems that appear to be happening to us then we can make our way out of our prisons and begin to change the reality that in the moment may not appear to be very good for us.

Explore the most valuable technique used to solve problems and create amazing innovation. Austin Vickers explains why innovation and problem solving all come from the age-old tradition of thinking ridiculously.

AUSTIN VICKERS:

Thinking ridiculously is the solution to many of our problems. One of my observations over the last ten years in working with literally thousands of people and corporations and in social situations, is that people become afraid of what others think of them and they allow this fear, this need to be generally accepted to put limitations on their thought processes.

But if you look at all of the great people in history, they were never afraid to think ridiculously. I mean imagine the person who first thought the Great Wall of China by building a wall across China that was visible from outer space. That’s a ridiculous idea to a lot of people until of course it’s actually accomplished and then it becomes one of the great wonders of the world.

Or many other people in science that have dared to think ridiculously. The first time they ever thought about putting a spaceship on the moon. John F. Kennedy in his great speech was a ridiculous thinker. Or the person that talks now about creating a cloak of invisibility, which of course the US military is actually working on by the diffraction of light, for example.

So to think ridiculously we have to actually begin to act ridiculously. Sometimes in my coaching sessions with executives I intentionally put them in situations where they have to act ridiculous in front of their colleagues and friends, and if they can then I know that they have the potential to be a great leader because they can let go of what people are thinking about them.

So the question to ask yourself is, “How often are you willing to think ridiculously? How often are you willing to step outside with a bounce of normalcy or what is generally acceptable to your friends and family members and pursue ideas, pursue thoughts or actions that may appear ridiculous to other people but are a part of your imagination for a future that you want to create?” That’s the secret… think ridiculously.

What message is your depression and mood disorders trying to share with you? Executive leadership expert Austin Vickers explains the secret message our mood disorders are trying to share with us.

AUSTIN VICKERS: One of the examples that I believe really illustrates this principle is imagine somebody was coming over to your house with a very important message for you and you heard them knock at the door. You are at home but you pretended not to hear them and not answer the door.

If this message was critical for you, of course what would they do? They would keep knocking. In fact they would start to knock louder and harder to try to get your attention, and if you continue to ignore them (but the message was critical), soon they would start to try to break in the windows or come in through the chimney or do whatever they could to get your attention.

Well depression is kind of like that invited guest. It’s like that person coming to our house with a very important message. As long as we try to ignore them, then they are going to continue to knock at our doors louder and louder, stronger and stronger, until we stop and listen. If we would simply let depression in and embrace depression and listen to the message that depression is trying to bring to our lives, then we would be able to listen to the values that it brings, listen to the gifts that depression brings, and then depression becomes free to leave.

It may be an odd thought or an odd idea to think that depression is somehow beneficial to our lives, but some of the greatest artists in the world know that depression often brings creativity, it brings introspection, and a lot of times for example, even in my own life, I know that when I feel depressed, it’s a time for me to be creative. I can either fight depression and it stays and lingers, or I can take the message of depression, which is always to be introspective, to be creative. And if I focus on those values and I learn to nurture and develop those values in my life by being introspective and being creative, then depression has given me its gifts and it no longer needs to appear in my life.

So the next time depression shows up in your life, rather than resist it, or feel like you have to take drugs to overcome it, or deny that it even exists in your life, move towards it. Open the door, let it in, listen to its message and then try to develop the gifts that depression brings and I think you will find that depression no longer needs to stay in your life.

Millions of us still have issues from our childhood that effect our adult lives and personal relationships. That’s why self-help expert Austin Vickers explains how you can break free from your destructive childhood.

AUSTIN VICKERS: We don’t ever actually break free of our childhoods. One of the principles of science that we know is that energy is never created or destroyed, and in place of energy, you can put in the word ‘information’. So think of it this way; information is never created nor destroyed. The information that exists from your childhood events will exist and continue to exist forever. So the only question is, “What can we actually do with that information?”

When I am working with people, often I ask them this question, “Look, if I could take a magic wand and wave it and change any terrible event that ever occurred in your past, but if I wave this magic wand — although we can change the event in the past — what you will have no control over is the present or the future, and the waving of that wand has the potential to change everything that’s in your life today, all of the people that you love or care for, all of the circumstances of your life today, and going forward in the future, would you have me wave the magic wand?”

Literally, I have never had a single individual say to me they would wave the wand. So of course, we always think about changing the past but we never think about the idea that if we could change the past it would also affect the present and the future, and in truth most of us wouldn’t change the past if it also meant that it was changing the present and the future of our lives.

So all we can do is move forward, and in moving forward we have a choice about what we are going to do with that past, how we are going to integrate it into our lives, and we can learn to change the perception of it being something terrible into something that can teach us a value or give us a context with which to appreciate. The better question is, “How can I change the way I look at my past? How can I re-perceive the events of my past to contribute to my present or contribute to my future?” And if you’ll do that, then we can begin to make our way out of the prisons that keep us often trapped and stuck in a state of illusion.

AUSTIN VICKERS: We really have to use imagination to solve our problems, and like every great scientist in history, we have to learn how to challenge the assumptions that help to create those problems in the first place.

If a couple is fighting over finances or a person is fighting with their boss at work, our natural tendencies to always focus on the contribution to the problem by our partners or by the people we work for, but to really escape those problems we have to look at our own contribution to the problem. In other words, we have to challenge the very notion of how it is that we are actually creating that problem, and this requires the challenging of assumptions or our belief system.

But once we start to do that, once we really look at it and say, “Okay, what is it that I am doing to contribute to this problem and how might I imagine the outcome of this result or an attitude or perception I can bring to this event that would actually create harmony between me and my boss or me and my partner,” then we can begin to find our way out of it. So all problems are solved by imagination and by looking at that problem as an opportunity instead of a limitation in our life.

AUSTIN VICKERS: So documentaries often attempt to document reality. This film goes much farther than most documentaries, and that it actually questions what that reality is. What is the state of reality? What is our perception about reality and how might that perception, and therefore, the reality itself actually change?

The film is provocative and asks compelling questions about what is real and can people really change? I think if people go into this film with an open mind and an open heart they will really feel and experience a dramatic shift in the way that they look at the world.

I have experienced this in my own life. All of the expert witnesses that I cross-examined and interviewed for this particular trial, have had that experience and I know from even the limited amount of people who have watched this film that it can literally have a transformative effect in their lives. But the key is opening their mind to a new imagination, to a new perception of what is possible in your life, and if you will watch this film with that open mind, this film will also have that kind of transformational effect in your own life.

AUSTIN VICKERS: Positive thinking doesn’t really work. Positive thinking usually is covering up a whole lot of negative thinking.

People need to move towards the negative thinking instead of away from it.
Too often we try to escape our negative thinking by having these positive thoughts that aren’t real, and of course the universe or life responds to the real part of ourselves, which is negative thinking and brings more of that into our experience.

But if people will go towards negative thinking and look at it not critically or judgmentally, but actually looking at it to try to find the values that negative thinking brings to their lives, then they’ll have the opportunity to understand why negative thinking is actually important, why negative thinking actually serves them and what values it’s trying to express in their lives. And once they understand those values they can exemplify those values and bring them into their lives through other forms of behavior, other than negative thinking, and before you know it, these people become positive individuals that exude that positivity out into the world.

So don’t worry too much about positive thinking. Actually go the opposite direction from what most people are telling you. Move towards negative thinking and find the way that really brings value to your lives.

Find out how prisoners inspired filmmaker Austin Vickers to create the new docudrama, “People v. The State of Illusion”.

AUSTIN VICKERS: About 7 or 8 years ago I actually had the opportunity to go to Alcatraz prison one summer and take a tour, and our tour guy, it was a guy named ‘Whitey’ who had actually been a prisoner in Alcatraz for about 20 to 25 years.

So during one of the breaks I took the opportunity to speak to Whitey and I asked him, “What was it like actually living here on Alcatraz Island?” And he said, “Well obviously it was pretty hellacious”, but he said, “I’ll tell you something interesting”.

He said, “I can’t begin to tell you the number of friends I had who served on Alcatraz for 20-25 years and after being released from prison would go to San Francisco, commit a crime and intentionally allow themselves to be caught”.

And I asked why, I said, “Why on earth would they do that?” And he said, “Because as bad as Alcatraz was, at least it felt like home”, and that was the first time I think that I really started to think about why and how we actually choose sometimes horrific circumstances in order to feel secure, we trade our dreams for security.

And as I started to think about that metaphor of the prison and the prison life, it really occurred to me that we all create prisons for our own lives, and ultimately, my visit to Alcatraz prison and my thoughts about the prisons that we all create in our own lives, inspired me to make a movie to really illustrate these principles.

AUSTIN VICKERS: It’s easy to become judgmental about people who are liars or who are dishonest in life…but if we look beyond the behavior, if we really look at what motivates or what values dishonesty brings to our lives, we actually can find that there are some.

I know my own experience in life when I had been unauthentic. It’s usually been because I wanted to try to form a connection with the person that I am lying to. I don’t want to lose the relationship I have with them, or the connection that I have with them, so my lying is a form of trying to protect that connection.

If we focus on that value, the desire for connection, then we can begin to see beyond the behavior of lying or dishonesty and really look at the motivation of what the person is lying for or being dishonest about, and of course, the need for connection or the need for relationship is a value that’s important to all of us.

As that person then begins to take a look at their lives and evaluate where they are being connected to their work or with the people in their lives, they often find that there’s a lot of connection missing. Sometimes, even being connected to their real purpose in life or who they really are as a person. But once people begin to develop a connection with the people in their lives, with their life’s purpose, with their work, then they can begin to develop connection in many parts of their lives, and having a strong connection will actually then lead a way the desire to lie or be dishonest because they have so much connection in their lives; they don’t need to develop connection through lying.

So for most of us, we have to learn not to judge the behavior of a liar or the person who is unauthentic and, instead, we need to look at the value of connection that they are trying to establish and then try to determine how we can help them become more connected and help them understand that having connection in their lives to their work, to their relationships, will be the mechanism by which they no longer need to lie or be dishonest in their lives.
